Botswana - Wet&Wild Safari

Natural Selection offers an unforgettable adventure of 7 days and 6 nights in the Okavango Delta.

Botswana's Okavango Delta. The very name conjures up visions of quintessential African wildlife, bounding across grassy plains, lily-filled waterways, mokoro (canoe) safaris, and a medley of snorting hippos. Well, this Natural Selection custom itinerary gives you all of that – and a little more.

Over the seven days, we'll take you to two locations within the Delta, each one offering a unique experience in the pristine wilderness. First on the agenda is the 495,000 acre Khwai Private Reserve, and three nights at the bright and breezy Sable Alley. From your tented base, you'll game drive through herds of majestic elephant, spot the predators that hide in the shadows, and meander along the Khwai River on a walking safari. Then it's off to the Uncharted Expedition Camp. It's a semi-permanent camp with all the perks of a mobile expedition, and a variety of activities that just aren't possible anywhere else in the Delta.

  • Game-drive through the contrasting landscapes of the unique Khwai Game Reserve, keeping your eyes peeled for lion, leopard and wild dog as you go.
  • Gaze at the incredible views from the deck of your bedroom at Sable Alley (G&T in hand!).
  • Feast your eyes on huge herds of elephant. Botswana has one of the largest concentrations of pachyderms in Africa, and we know just where to find them.
  • Enjoy the freedom, flexibility and fabulous range of activities at the Uncharted Expedition Camp, a semi-permanent camp that offers all the excitement of a mobile expedition.
  • Satisfy your inner explorer and sleep under the stars (feather bedding and hot water bottles included), in a mobile camp on a private island in the Delta.
  • Boat along the gin-clear waterways of the Delta, and visit areas that are inaccessible by vehicle.

Day 1: Arrive in Maun, and fly to Sable Alley, Khwai Private Reserve
Your first day on safari is always a good one, and when you arrive in Khwai Private Reserve, you won't be disappointed. Leap into action on a game drive, or settle into your surroundings with a crisp G&T in camp as the sun goes down.

Day 2 & 3: Sable Alley, Khwai Private Reserve
Game drive along the Khwai River, watching the comings and goings of the wildlife, or lace up your walking boots and explore the reserve on two feet.

Day 4: Fly to the Uncharted Expedition Camp, Okavango Delta Region
Today, you'll meet your guide and crew, and head deep into the Delta to the Uncharted Expedition Camp.

Day 5: Uncharted Expedition Camp, Okavango Delta Region
Today, you have the option to boat into the heart of the Delta and spend the night on a lantern-lit, private island, surrounded by nature at her very best.

Day 6: Uncharted Expedition Camp, Okavango Delta Region
On the way back to camp, picnic under the shade of the trees, swim in secret spots that only we know about, and watch water birds, crocodile and hippo.

Day 7: Fly back to Maun and depart
All good things must come to an end, and today, it's time to fly back to Maun for your flight home.

Sable Alley will be your home in Khwai. The camp was established to create a meaningful bridge between the tourism industry and local villagers, and we're proud of what we've achieved so far. Sable overlooks a peaceful lagoon (in fact, sometimes it's not so peaceful with all the wildlife action), and you can enjoy the views from one of the 12, ensuite tents, the swimming pool, or the stylish main area.

The Unchartered Expedition Camp is a unique, semi-permanent camp in the heart of the Delta. If you thought mobile camping was all soggy toast and cold showers, think again. The 1920s-style bedroom tents come complete with real beds, feather pillows, flushing loos and hot buckets showers. When it's time to eat, expect bone-handled silver cutlery, white linen tablecloths, and food that looks as good as it tastes.

The 495,000 acre Khwai Private Reserve is part of the larger Okavango Delta World Heritage Site, and the entire region is buzzing with wildlife. Buffalo, zebra, reedbuck, wildebeest, and sable and roan antelope dot the plains, and there’s an extraordinary number of elephant plodding through the bush. On game drives, you'll watch lion and cheetah on the prowl, and seek out elusive leopard and wild dog. Then there's the unique aquatic antelope (sitatunga and lechwe) and the seemingly endless stream of water birds. And that's just the beginning…

The Okavango Delta is particularly well-known for its diverse and staggeringly high quantities of game. During your stay at the Expedition Camp, you’re more than likely to sight zebra, wildebeest, impala, and the elusive predators. There will also be the chance to sit back and watch super-herds of elephant as they splish and splash by the water – and watch out for crocodile lurking in the shallows, and hippo jostling for territory.
